Alternatives to SPANKING Workshop
The Hancock County Children’s Council is pleased to announce a new workshop for parents looking to create a nurturing environment and developing parenting practices of providing positive, non-violent discipline to their children. This FREE “Alternatives to Spanking” workshop with Linda Levesque will be held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009, 9:30am to 11:30am, at Downeast Health Services, 52 Christian Ridge Road, Ellsworth. Recognizing & Reporting Signs of Stress in Families for Mandated Reporters of Suspected Child Abuse
On Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 9am to noon, the Hancock County Children’s Council will provide training for mandated reporters. During the past year, representatives from the Maine Child Abuse Prevention Councils, Child Protective Intake Services, Maine Children’s Trust, and Maine’s Early Childhood Initiative have developed a new curriculum to be used statewide for consistent training for all professionals mandated to report suspicion of child abuse.

NEW! Relatives as Parents Support Group
Many families have recently undertaken the unexpected responsibility of caring for a relative’s child. You are invited to join a monthly “Relatives as Parents” facilitated support group. Participants will learn how to work towards creating environments that help increase protective factors, such as developing community connections, improving access to resources, and reducing the social isolation by sharing common problems.

LEARN HOW TO SOOTHE A CRYING BABY to Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome
On February 25th, Ellsworth High School Project Aspire, in collaboration with the Hancock County Children’s Council, will present students in grades 8 through 12 with an opportunity to learn how to soothe a crying baby. This 3pm workshop will use the Children’s Council Shaken Baby demonstration model and as well as supplemental materials to help workshop participants learn to manage their own frustration in caring for a crying infant.

The Hancock County Children’s Council and Parents Are Teachers Too, programs of Downeast Health Services Inc will be presenting a FREE 4-week series beginning Tuesday, February 3rd through February 24, 2009 on “Connection Parenting”. This weekly series is for parents and other caregivers of pre-school and school-age children.
