THE HANCOCK COUNTY CHILDREN'S COUNCIL
is a community effort dedicated to the PREVENTION of child abuse and
neglect in our local area. We work to create programs which help
children and families live healthier lives. We provide education
programs to children, parents, and professionals, and coordinate
with schools, agencies and individuals to reach out to families in
need.
In MAINE there are more than
SEVENTEEN THOUSAND reports each year.
While the statistics are
startling, we know that the number of cases actually reported
represents only a portion of the number of children who are
experiencing some form of abuse or neglect.
There
are many families struggling with substance abuse, unemployment and
economic stress; there are children who are too frightened to speak
about what is happening to them; there are children who try
desperately to cope with daily pain alone; and there are children
whose tears we will never see. We must reach out to those who are
already in abusive situations, and work to prevent child abuse where
we can.
