What Happens After a Report
Is Made to the Police

There are six steps to completing the process of bringing a sexual assault case to court and there are various people who will be involved. The following is a list of the people who can be expected to be involved and the steps that the case will go through.

The People:

Police Officer. The police officer is usually the first person from law enforcement to respond to a report of sexual assault. This includes taking a statement from the victim and securing the crime scene for further investigation and evidence collection.

Detective/Investigating Officer. A detective or investigating officer will be assigned to the case to interview the victim and any witnesses. They will also investigate the crime scene.

District Attorney. The district attorney or an assistant district attorney will be assigned to the case. Their job is to prove to the court that the crime occurred. You do not need to hire an attorney.

Victim/Witness Advocate. The victim/witness advocate works out of the district attorney's office and is able to answer questions regarding the court process and the status of the case.

Sexual Assault Center Advocate. The sexual assault center advocate is available to provide emotional support, referrals and advocacy through the medical exam, police investigation and court process to the victim, their family and friends. They are also available after the legal process is completed.
